Fish ‘n’ Chips are available for the first 600 people. There will be no charge, but only one portion per person collecting allowed. A hand stamp will be used to show collection.
THE LARGEST NAVAL AIR AND LAND OPERATION IN HISTORY
OPERATION OVERLORD
6th June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed. In 1944 Operation Overlord saw around 4,000 ships and landing craft set down about 132,500 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation. Bramley Parish Council are marking the 80th anniversary of D-DAY by lighting a beacon at 21.15 on 6th June 2024 on Clift Meadow, in celebration of the “light of peace” that emerged out of the darkness of war.
Commemoration/Celebration:-
- 30 – the Church Bells at St James Church will be Ringing out for Remembrance and Peace along with Bellringers all over the world
- 10 – we will start our Remembrance/Celebration with the band TIN PAN ALLIES, 5 musicians playing music whilst roaming around the Meadow and attendees
- 45 – the D-Day Proclamation will be made by our Town Crier, The Rev’d Mark Anderson. Food will start to be available for those attending
- Up to 20.20 – Tin Pan Allies will be entertaining people on the Meadow
- 20 – the Sea Cadets , Army Cadets and RAF Cadets will readi out “The D-DAY HEROES” Poem specially written for the anniversary
- Up to 21.05 – Tin Pan Allies continue with their entertainment
- 10 – “The INTERNATIONAL TRIBUTE” will be read by Retired Officer Chris Holland
- 15 – the BEACON is lit along with others across the UK and World in celebration of the “Light of Peace”. This will be flowed by the National Anthem, followed by the finale from Tin Pan Allies.
Food will be provided by Hampshire Feast – a portion of Fish and Chips will be available for all attendees free of charge (one portion per person collecting, vegetarian and children’s portions available). For over 160 years fish and chips has been a firm favourite of the British public providing nourishment for the nation. This was never more important than during the war years when the ingredients were left unrationed to help feed those involved in the war effort and keep the country and our factories working.
